Turning Fresh Workplace Ideas Into Practical Change

Planning for a new year is an opportunity to question whether the workplace still supports the way a business needs to operate.

That makes fresh thinking particularly valuable. A new perspective can reveal a problem that has become accepted, suggest a different use for existing space or challenge the assumptions behind a planned investment.

On 22 October, the finalists in the British Council for Offices’ 2026 NextGen Ideas Competition will share their ideas for the future of the workplace. NCG is proud to support the programme as Gold Partner, helping bring a technology perspective to that conversation.

The need to plan for change is reflected in CBRE’s 2026 European Office Occupier Sentiment Survey. Among respondents, 48% anticipated needing multipurpose, reconfigurable layouts. The survey included more than 90 office occupiers across Europe.

For NCG, adaptable space starts with understanding what people need to do in it. Moving a partition or changing a room’s purpose can also affect connectivity, access, booking systems and AV. Considering those connections early helps teams understand what an idea will require in practice.

When assessing a workplace improvement, useful questions include:

  • What problem will it solve for the people using the space?

  • Which systems and infrastructure will it rely on?

  • How will it accommodate different or changing requirements?

  • Who will manage, support and assess it once it is in use?

These questions can help give an idea a workable route from discussion to delivery. They also create a shared conversation between occupiers, designers, property teams and technology specialists.

As businesses shape their 2027 plans, the BCO showcase offers an opportunity to hear emerging voices and consider different approaches to familiar workplace challenges.

We look forward to supporting the finalists and the conversations their ideas will start. Meet the NCG team at the showcase, or talk to us about the technology behind your next workplace improvement.
